Upon a raised throne, crowned with antlers of wood, he delivered judgement upon those fool enough to enter his domain unbidden…
All hail the next chapter in our Masters Collection. Thranduil, the Woodland King is the fourth in our line of fine art Middle-earth statues, and our first from The Hobbit motion picture trilogy – making this an auspicious collectible indeed.
FEATURES OF THE MASTERS COLLECTION: THRANDUIL
Sculpted by Weta Workshop artist Steven Saunders and towering at a metre in height – with a width to match – Thranduil, the Woodland King represents the largest 1:6 scale statue Weta Workshop has created.
The statue was brought to life through the combined talents of Weta Workshop’s technicians, craftspeople, and collectibles development team, who were able to draw on rich reference material: the actual costume from the film; concept art; and photographs from set. “Everything was incredibly well documented,” says collectibles art director Daniel Falconer. To support and enhance the cohesion of the piece, Steven followed the sculpture through each stage of the creative process, from digital modelling, sculpting and model-making, right through to molding, casting, and painting.
The rich detail was achieved through a combination of digital and physical sculpting. Once the form was 3D printed, Steven applied a base layer of clay and worked methodically to capture a range of textures by hand. The resultant statue is one of great contrast; of surfaces rough and matte; smooth and glossy. Flattened staircase slabs and intricate fallen foliage. Above it all, the curling antlers of the Elven throne, half-carved, half-grown, with the King himself sitting in autumnal fabric, majestic.
